In partnership with El Museo del Barrio, join the Museum for African Art for a series of dance workshops inspired by African traditions honoring creation and the Mother Principle. The female aesthetic holds a place of honor in the sacred spiritual systems of numerous Diasporic communities, including those of the Yoruba Ifa, the Haitian Vodun, and the Espiritismo tradition of Puerto Rico. The Ase Dance Theatre Collective will lead participatory dance workshops paying homage not only to Mother Earth, but also to the wonderful women in all our lives. In addition to these dance workshops, the Museum's Youth Ambassador Interns will lead gallery tours and art-making workshops for families.
The Ase Dance Theatre Collective is a professional neo-folkloric performance ensemble that is dedicated to preserving the past, present and future of the African presence in the "New World."Â Since 2000, ASE has performed work that links modern dance, original vernacular movement, and traditional dance theater from the African Diaspora to conceptual ideas in the human experience.
Once a month, El Museo del Barrio opens its doors to everyone interested in exploring the vibrancy and diversity of Latino culture through free concerts, exhibitions, gallery and walking tours, art-making workshops, and spoken word recitals. Super Sábado! showcases traditions, cultural expressions, and the latest in Latino art. As many Latino communities and traditions are rooted in African cultural heritage and practices, the Museum for African Art is pleased to collaborate and contribute programs as part of El Museo del Barrio's Super Sabado! program. For more information, visit www.elmuseo.org.
Museum for African Art education programs are supported in part by grants from the Cultural Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the May and Samuel Rudin Foundation, and Jack Rudin.
