Carnaval! Super Sabado! Target Free Third Saturdays at El Museo
February 18, 201212:00 pm - 3:00 pm El Museo del Barrio, 1230 5th Ave. at 104th St.
In partnership with El Museo del Barrio, join the Museum for African Art for a wonderful series of fun dance workshops from Trinidad’s Carnival tradition, which traces its beginnings back over 200 years. Rooted in the African practices of masquerading and processioning syncretized with early Christian pre-Lent celebrations, Carnival has a long-standing history throughout the Caribbean and the Americas in such places as Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, the city of New Orleans and of course New York City’s own borough of Brooklyn. In addition to these dance workshops, the Museum’s Youth Ambassador Interns will also be leading gallery tours and mask-making workshops for families.
Once a month, El Museo del Barrio opens its doors to everyone interested in exploring the vibrancy and diversity of Latino culture through free concerts, exhibitions, gallery and walking tours, art making workshops, and spoken word recitals. As many communities and traditions of Latino culture are rooted in African cultural heritage and practices, the Museum for African Art is pleased to collaborate and contribute programs as part of El Museo del Barrio’s, Super Sabado!

Museum for African Art education programs are supported in part by grants from the Cultural Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the May and Samuel Rudin Foundation, Jack Rudin, and the Mitsui USA Foundation.
