Olokun's Coral Necklace beading with the Central Park Conservancy

May 18, 2008
1:00pm - 2:00pm

The Central Park Conservancy welcomes teaching artist Sandra Bell of the Museum for African Art, who sheds light on the Yoruba people in a beading workshop like none other.

The Yoruba people, an ethnic group that populates Nigeria and other nearby West African regions, follow a religion with a history of colorful mythology and beautiful spiritual handicrafts.

Hear Nigerian myths about Olokun, the Yoruba God of waters, wealth, and fertility. Learn about shrines dedicated to this Yoruba deity, and create your own beaded necklace in the style of the Yoruba to take home with you.

Location: Central Park's Children's Glade-West of Great Hill Oval from West 103rd to West 106th Streets.  Enter Park at Central Park West and 103rd Street.

FREE. ALL AGES. Advance registration not required. For more information, please call 212-860-1370 or visit www.centralparknyc.org
