Bogumil Jewsiewicki, professor of history at Université Laval, Québec, will speak about the history of copper mining in Lubumbashi and the significance of artist Sammy Baloji’s photographs taken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Baloji’s recent series entitled The Beautiful Time in Lubumbashi, the artist employs photomontages to combine archival images of copper mine workers and colonial administrators with the artist’s photographs of contemporary Lubumbashi.
The Beautiful Time in Lubumbashi: Photography by Sammy Baloji will be on view from March 26 – April 28, 2010 at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery, 135 East 22nd Street (646-660-6652).
This lecture is part of the Museum's series entitled, Conversations with a Continent: Profiles of African Artists, which highlights several established contemporary African artists.
