This piece embodies the fusion of traditional and contemporary in the Ivory Coast. This spirit spouse is based on a long tradition of sculpting figures to represent the spouse that each person is believed to have in the spirit world. These representations have changed over time and are currently created to represent a contemporary person of professional prestige indicated by their Western professional dress. This figure is dressed in a very European fashion including the pith hat which was very popular during the colonial period.
