Liberated Voices: Contemporary Art from South Africa

Liberated Voices: Contemporary Art from South Africa
Having defined themselves for decades by the oppression of Apartheid, South African artists are seeking ways to reconcile their past and present in order to meet the future. This soul-searching process turns on such questions as "where do we go from here?" "what does it mean to be black, colored, or white in the new South Africa?," and "what emotional history must be dealt with to enable harmonious living among diverse populations?"

The major trends in contemporary artistic practice in South Africa are highlighted in over 100 works including paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and videos made since the end of Apartheid in 1994. By focusing on young artists who represent diversity in today's South Africa, this book will, through both their art and words, make accessible their personal experiences that provide compelling insight into this dynamic country.

Featured artists include Bridget Baker, Willie Bester, Mbongeni Richman Buthelezi, David Koloane, Samson Mnisi, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Brett Murray, Thabiso Phokompe, Penelope Siopis, Claudette Schreuders, Paul Stopforth, Sue Williamson, and Sandile Zulu.

Exhibition catalogue edited and written by Frank Herreman, assisted by Mark D'Amato with contributions: Liberated Voices: An Introduction by Mongane Wally Serote, Postapartheid Expression and A New Voice by David Koloane, Looking Back, Looking Forward: An Overview of South African Art by Sue Williamson, Beyond the Trauma: The Transition of the Resistance Aesthetic in Contemporary South African Art by Mark D'Amato, Artmaking in South Africa: Shifting Divisions and Role of Education by Andries Walter Opiphand and Kristine Roome, and conversations with the artists by Bongi Dhlomo, David Koloane, Clive Kellner, Jennifer Law, Ivor Powell, Kristine Roome, and Claudette Schreuders.
