Large Baule Plate
These plates were made by hand in a women's coperative in the village of Tanoh Sakassou, Cote d'Ivoire. The pieces were crafted using traditional techniques, formed by hand without the use of a pottery wheel.
The traditional incised designs are cut into the partially dried body of the pot with a narrow blade. After drying in the sun, the plates are slow-fired all night in a kiln. Then they are subjected to a quick firing on the ground, which gives it its color. They are then immersed in a mixture of water and highly resinous tree bark that gives a shiny surface that is somewhat water resistant.
Hand washable.
