Immigrants: Africans in New York

The groundbreaking symposium Immigrants: Africans in New York is now available, in part, to Museum for African Art website users. Included in this online presentation are abstracts from the twenty presenting scholars whose research deals with many topics relating to Africans who have made their homes in New York City. The subjects of these abstracts include:
African Immigrants in New York in Comparative and Historical Perspective
Immigrant/Community Partnerships
Issues of Gender among African Immigrants in New York City
The Old and New African Diaspora in New York City
The website includes the introductory remarks by Enid Schildkrout, Microcosmic History , Victoria Ebin's paper, "'Little Senegal' vs. the New Harlem Renaissance: Senegalese Immigrants and the Gentrification of Harlem," and Nancy Foner's paper entitled, "Immigrant New York at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century." These sample papers give insight into the study of African immigrants in New York City. Papers from other presenters will be added over time to represent the spectrum of information presented.
Photographs by Susan Liebold (below) of Africans living in New York accompany the scholarly information.
The symposium, and this online publication were funded by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this website do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
