Two Popular Lecture Series Receive Additional Funding
September 2, 2008In August, New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) awarded the Museum’s two popular lecture series, Time Lines: New Perspectives on Contemporary and Traditional African Art and Conversations with a Continent, $5,000 for the continuation of these programs. This is NYSCA’s second year supporting these series.
Timelines continues the Museum’s successful tradition of presenting a wide range of lectures concerning the arts of Africa and the Diaspora and has focused on topics such as CT Scanning of Malian Antiquities, Hip Hop in Africa, New Media, and the exhibition Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art. The upcoming season promises to be just as engaging and will explore topics such as Aesthetics in Nigeria, South African Poetry, and Dogon Masquerade.
Conversations with a Continent offers a series of monthly lectures on select African nations with a wide breadth of speakers introducing their countries from different perspectives. Last season featured: Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and Madagascar. This season’s nations include: Tanzania, Morocco, and Sudan. The program will continue to introduce the general public to African art and culture and to the contemporary realities of life on two continents. Conversations with a Continent is organized in conjunction with the 92nd Street Y.
These events are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
Additional support for these and other Museum public programs has been received from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
