Awarded $100,000 from MetLife Foundation

September 10, 2007

In November 2007, the MetLife Foundation announced the winners of its new Museums and Community Connections initiative. This competitive program resulted in the selection of thirteen art museums, from an applicant pool of over one hundred, to receive awards totaling $1,000,000. Grants range from $30,000 to $100,000.

The Museum for African Art is honored to have been awarded a grant at the $100,000 level. It will be used for community and educational programs offered in conjunction with the Museum's upcoming exhibition Grass Roots: Africa Orgins of an American Art, which opens at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC in August 2008.

Grass Roots has been curated with extensive input and participation from local basket makers in the South Carolina Lowcountry. It will be complemented by innovative local educaiton projects, such as the development of Lowcountry Heritage trail itineraries for tourists, educators, and students, and collaboration with the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival and its related crafts camp to train young people in the art of making traditional coiled baskets.
